Free Lawyer Consultation: What to Confirm First
A free lawyer consultation can mean different things: an introductory call, a limited discussion or an assessment before a firm decides whether to offer a service. Confirm the scope before booking. The word ‘free’ alone does not tell you what advice, document review or follow-up is included.

Confirm what the appointment includes
Ask how long the meeting lasts, who will attend and whether documents will be reviewed beforehand. If you need an answer about a letter, ask whether that letter can be considered during the appointment. A brief suitability call and a detailed review are different tasks. Request an explanation if the advertised service and the booking description do not match.
Check charges beyond the meeting
Ask whether there is a fee for written advice, reading records or a second appointment. Find out how paid work is authorised and how its cost will be explained. The Law Society of NSW referral guidance recommends checking the cost of the first appointment before booking; do not assume that a referral or directory listing itself includes a free consultation.
Bring a focused question and document list
State the decision you need help with and identify dates on correspondence. Keep a short chronology and list of available records. Ask how much material to provide and how to send it. This helps the firm assess whether the appointment can address your question without encouraging unnecessary disclosure through an unverified channel.
Leave with the next step in writing
After the meeting, confirm whether the firm has offered to act, what remains undecided and who is responsible for the next action. If you have not engaged it, ask where to seek further help. Do not treat an appointment booking or a promise to call back as confirmation that a deadline is being managed on your behalf.
Worked comparison example
A hypothetical advertisement offers a free initial call. Your question requires reviewing a long insurer decision. Ask whether the call includes that review and, if not, how the review would be scoped and priced. That clarification is more useful than assuming all advertised consultations are interchangeable.
