Serious Injury Compensation and Support Systems
A serious injury can involve several systems at once. Treatment funding, income benefits, disability supports, damages and recovery claims should be identified separately before settlement decisions are made.
Identify every current support pathway
Record the motor or workplace scheme, private insurance, Medicare, Centrelink, NDIS and any employer benefits involved. One payment can affect another without replacing it.
Document long-term function and care
Keep rehabilitation plans, capacity assessments, equipment and home-modification information, paid-care invoices, and a careful record of unpaid assistance.
Check recovery and repayment issues
Medicare and the NDIS have compensation-recovery processes. Ask who obtains the required statements and estimates, and how proposed settlement figures treat those amounts.
Plan the decision, not only the claim
Ask how future treatment, care, earnings, tax, investment advice, legal capacity, guardianship or trust arrangements may affect the proposed resolution.
