Australian injury guide
TPD and Insurance Through Superannuation
A TPD claim is based on the policy terms and evidence, not simply the diagnosis. Cover may sit inside more than one super account, and the insurer and trustee can have different roles.
Find every policy and relevant date
Check super statements, online accounts and product disclosure material for TPD, income protection and life cover. Record employment, cover and contribution dates before moving or closing an account.
Read the applicable disability definition
Policies can use different occupational, education, retraining, daily-living or permanence tests. Ask which wording applies and why.
Coordinate medical and vocational evidence
Keep treating records, work history, qualifications, role demands, rehabilitation information and insurer correspondence. Ask before requesting costly reports.
Compare the proposed legal service
Clarify whether the firm handles the insurer and trustee process, internal complaints, AFCA, court work and any interaction with workers compensation or another injury claim.
