Personal injury is not one national process. Motor, workplace, medical, premises, product, institutional and fatal injury matters can use different state legislation, statutory insurers, notice requirements and court rules. Start with where and how the injury occurred, not a generic compensation label.
Identify the claim pathway
Record whether the injury involved work, transport, treatment, premises, a public authority, a product or organised activity. Early insurer notices and claim forms can apply before an ordinary court limitation period. Children and people under disability may have additional rules.
Preserve useful evidence
Keep medical certificates, photographs, incident and police references, wage records, receipts, witness details and correspondence. Save original digital files and write a neutral chronology. Avoid public allegations and ask before sending sensitive material through an enquiry form.
Compare the proposed legal service
Ask each firm who will assess the claim, which jurisdiction and scheme applies, what immediate work is proposed, and when prospects will be reviewed. Compare professional fees, uplift, disbursements, adverse-cost risk, communication and what happens if the matter ends early.
